NPPL Rulebook - Top Changes for 2008

The NPPL Steering Committee met in Las Vegas, NV February 8 - 10, 2008 to cover policies and rules for the 2008 season.

Below is a list of some of the key changes you will see in the 2008 NPPL Rulebook.

Paintball Field Layouts
The field layouts will be released for each event at least 3 weeks prior to the event. The league will be using 3 Field Layouts at each event in 2008, replicating the Center Court and Field 2 layouts on Fields 4 and 5 when there are 5 fields, and replicating the Field 3 layout on Field 6 when there are 6 fields. Two new bunkers have been added to the NPPL Field Layouts for 2008; the Cake and the Maya. To see these new bunkers, visit the Field Layout section of http://www.nppl.com/.

Paintball Game Clock
This year the league will be incorporating a game clock on Center Court. The clock will start at 07:10 with horns sounding at 07:00 and 00:00 to start and stop play. If the clock is well received, we may add clocks to other fields.

Paintball Team Draws
The League has placed a new rule and chart into the 2008 rulebook showing how the team draws will be handled for the 2008 season. The system has not changed, but the league is publishing this so that teams have a better understanding of the system.

Re-Hanging the Flag
The Steering Committee has voted on changing the re-hang rule from past years. Now, if a dirty hang occurs (the player hanging the flag is found to have a hit on him/her), the proper penalties will be assessed and if there are enough players remaining, the flag must be ran back by a live player and re-hung. The player will then pull the flag and brought back to his/her flag station for a clean hang.

Suspensions
After each event, the league will be updating "The Suspension List" on www.NPPL.com. This list will include the details surrounding any suspensions issued throughout the season including the name of the recipient, and how many games are left for the penalty to be served. In addition, the Steering Committee has issued a new rule stating the Head Referee on each field may issue a (1) game suspension instead of a larger suspension for infractions the he/she deems not as severe under the rules of the NPPL 08' Rulebook.

Penalty Flags
To better alert the audience of when a penalty has been called, Referees will now throw a flag up into the air when the penalty takes place.

Paintball Format Changes
The Steering Committee and NPPL Annual Meeting attendees requested for no changes to be made to the 7-man format used in the NPPL Super 7 World Series.

For more rule modifications/changes please review the 2008 NPPL Rulebook. The entire rulebook will be released on http://www.nppl.com/ this week. Should you have any questions regarding the rules, please email Rules@nppl.com

Paintball Field Layouts for Huntington Beach NPPL 2008

Nice and early, the NPPL is pleased to release the paintball field layouts for this year's NPPL Huntington Beach event.

To make it easier for teams to walk fields and to reduce the number of field layouts each team will need to practice, the NPPL will be using 3 different layouts at each event. In Huntington Beach, the NPPL field and Angel field will share the same layout, the Spyder field and Chronic field will have the same layout and the JT field and Eclipse field will be sharing a layout as well.

Two new shapes have been added to the NPPL Fields for 2008, the cake and the maya.

Click on the links below to view each Paintball Field Layout (please note, the Pros and Semi Pros will be playing on Center Court and the Spyder field).

Kingman Spyder Sonix 2007 Paintball Reviews

"Spyder Sonix 2007 is an excellent paintball marker for the price. Never chops, good speed, and accurate for a stock barrel. A barrel would make it more accurate but if you are on a budget the stock barrel wont annoy you and make you wish u never bought this marker. The marker looks pretty sick in my opinion and has a nice color (titanium). Its easy to clean and take apart. Just about everything you could like if you want a budget gun and you are a beginner.

Before shooting you need to chronograph your fps. Mines was averaging around 300 - 350! That means cutting the spring a little bit."

"To start out I am pretty much a beginner paintball player. Anyways I took my Sonix 2007 to play at Sgt splatters on Sunday and the marker played pretty well. If you wanna have a good time, check all the screws on your marker just in case. I had to miss out on a game because the bottom screw was missing which caused the grip to be a little loose from the bottom CO2 thing.

The paintball marker played alright, it never chopped or had problems like getting paint stuck inside, nothing like that, I didn't have to use my squeegee. The marker shot well in my opinion but next time I need a new barrel... maybe $40 Smart Parts. You don't need an electronic hopper but it will help if your shooting a lot.

Now if I was to go back in time I wouldn't have purchased this paintball marker because I would rather of invested for a Spyder Pilot since its electronic. Electronics are very nice on the field since you can fire rapidly unlike mechanics.

For a mechanical gun tho the Spyder Sonix and the Spyder Classic Series is the way to go!"

"You can't go wrong with the 2007 model Spyder Classic line. It is THE BEST entry level paintball marker out there for several reasons:

  1. They are nigh indestructable
  2. They are highly upgradable
  3. They are THE MOST EASILY maintained paintball marker available (the quick strip bolt allows you to clean the bolt and upper tube without having to worry about springs and other parts going AWOL from the lower tube assembly).

In fact, you could probably get away with cleaning it in-game if you needed to. My only concern with the paintball marker is the new design does allow the potential for dirt to enter the lower tube of the marker from the top of the gun (since it it partially exposed). This isn't necessarily bad though, since you can now oil the striker without taking it out of the marker. Also, if you do take apart the lower tube... lining the striker up is a bit of a hassle when you reassemble it."

"price: this marker comes for an excellent price, you can get everything you need as a start up package for well under $100. i got mine for $90 and then used the extra $10 dollars i saved to get necessary items like oil, anti-fog, and squeegees.

barrel: the barrel is actually fairly accurate for a stock. i have heard that it is more accurate than a stock 98 custom, but i have no personal experience to back this up. the porting on the front is too short to reduce noise a considerable amount, but i guess it helps. also the barrel is 9.5 inches which is longer than the industry standard of 8.5.

bolt: the bolt is a top cocking pull pin delrin bolt. the delrin is great as it does not weigh anything and improves you cyclic time, also is has no venturi, which is good. the best part about this bolt, and possibly the marker over all is the pull pin cocking nob that allows for a very quick field strip. what you can do is pull up on the cocking nob, which disengages the bolt from the striker, and allows you to pull the whole bolt out of the marker, leaving the upper tube open for cleaning. this is great as if you get a break you can clean all of the top of tube your marker without risking losing springs and o-rings from the lower tube. also you can oil your striker without actually having to take it out of the marker. literally you can field strip this marker, you could actually do it during a game. there are only two possible problems that could arise with this bolt. delrin can swell if it becomes too wet, this usually happens if you have low quality delrin. this though has not happened to me and it can be prevented by just wiping down your bolt (which you can easily remove from your marker) if it gets wet with paint. the second problem is that dirt could possibly fall past your bolt and into the lower tube of the marker, though this has a small possibility because it would have to fall in during the time your bolt is cycling forwards. even if it did though it would be easy to clean out.

trigger: it is a standard double trigger, with a pretty long pull. you cannot adjust the trigger pull in any way without modifying the marker. though you could do some home grown adjustments and mods pretty easily.

feed neck: the gun comes with the standard spyder clear plastic feed neck. i have heard that these break easily but that hasn't happened to me yet. my biggest problem with this feed neck is that is raises your hopper so ridiculously high above your marker it almost looks comical. also a pet peeve of mine with it is that the screws to tighten it are on the short side and it is really easy to have them fall off when you are un-tightening your hopper.

Grips: the grips on this marker i have to say are very good for a stock gun. they are this rubber plastic composite. they are grippy, even through gloves, but not too soft that they can be damaged easily. on the other hand there are no grips on the gas-through fore grip, but that can easily be fixed.

other: this marker has some other non-part related pros and cons. the marker is very light, with my full setup weighing about 3 pounds. this is great for mobility and getting to bunkers faster, which is great if you like to play dagger. also a great benefit to this marker is the large amount of after market upgrades for it. a problem with this marker though is chopping. even though the trigger pull is fairly long, the low pressure chamber combined with the delrin bolt lead to a very fast cyclic time (for a stock mech.) so it is easy to out shoot you hopper and chop a ball. that is why i recommend getting a better hopper before getting a better barrel. you could buy an ACS bolt for it too, but i have not found one that fits the new '07 models. also remember to check you screws between games, and make sure you brought your allen wrench with you, because they like to start coming loose. lastly i have heard that some of them need tuning out of the box, as you cannot turn the velocity low enough. this did not happen with me. this can be easily fixed by cutting off a piece of the spring and then re-stretching it to the right length. remember one coil is about 10fps."

"The Spyder Sonix 2007 is a great marker 4 a new player it hardly ever chops is pretty fast 4 a semi auto... and is a good looking marker... the only minor bugs are that if u pick a sonic up ur gonna need a better barrel... and sometimes the velocity gets real squirrely... but some upgrades on air should fix that.... all in all for the price the sonix is a good marker.... but definitly not 4 the advanced player..... i find the Spyder MR1 paintball gun to be a much nicer gun and worth the xtra cash........"

NPPL 2008 Pricing Structure

NPPL Releases Pricing Structure for 2008
Introduces discount program

Registration for the 2008 NPPL Huntington Beach event, which will be held on the beach March 28 – 30, was opened Monday, February 4th. For the second consecutive season, the NPPL will not be raising team entry fees.

To make it easier for players to compete at the national level, the league is offering three different discount possibilities to NPPL teams in 2008. These new pricing guidelines are as follows:

1. All teams will have the option to pre-pay the season up front with a 10% discount.
2. Semi-Pro and Divisional teams that pay by event will receive the following discounts:

  • On their second event of the season, $100 reduction.
  • On their third event of the season, $200 reduction.
  • On their fourth event of the season, $300 reduction.
  • On their fifth event of the season, $400 reduction.
  • In total, they will be able to receive a $1,000 reduction on their season.

3. In addition, teams playing in three events or more are eligible to enter into a credit card payment plan and any on line processing fees will be waived. In this plan, the NPPL will set convenient monthly payments based on which events the teams are playing in.

The NPPL did not raise prices last season, and once again we will not raise prices this season. We will, however, be introducing a processing fee for later registration. This will add a $100 or $200 charge per event depending on how late payment is received. Late registrations introduce additional time and costs into our process and we need to work with our teams to better conclude registration (and payments) earlier. This will ensure we are able to release the schedule out to the teams and public much earlier.

NPPL 2008

Below is a sample of the pricing structure for each NPPL event based on date payment is received, using the Huntington Beach event dates. Please note these prices do not reflect any of the above mentioned discount plans.

My paintball poll: Which paintball format do you prefer?

Look at the results of my first paintball poll. During 30th days, readers of my blog were asked about their paintball format prefer.

Which paintball format do you prefer?

X-ballX-ball — 16%(15)16% (15)
10-man10-man — 9%(8)9% (8)
7-man7-man — 8%(7)8% (7)
5-man5-man — 20%(18)20% (18)
3-man3-man — 14%(13)14% (13)
Rec-ballRec-ball — 34%(31)34% (31)

Rec-ball is the most popular paintball format for readers of my blog.

REC-BALL (Recreation Ball in brief) includes all those types and styles that Paintball has adopted ever since it started up, except from Speedball.

Rec-ball, is a catch-all phrase meaning just about any paintball game that you play just for the fun of it (not for points to win a tournament).

Rec-ball can include big games (games with huge numbers of players), scenerios (games with a theme), and walk-ons (where you just show up at a field and find some teamates.)There are a wide variety of rec-ball playing feilds. It is often played in the woods, but can also be played in outdoor concept fields (such as the fields at the Blitz) or in indoor fields.

Rec-ball is the kind of playing you do for fun, without permanent teams, and where the slate of wins and loses is wiped clean at the end of the day.

The Woodsball (forest), Urbanball (cities), Snowball (snow), scripts of imagination, scripts of tactic and anything else that someone can image, belong to this category (Rec Ball), however always by keeping the basic rules of safety.

Free Paintball Stuff

I’m not one to rant or spam about a certain product or service but if I see something that works, I’ll definitely give you my word it actually works. This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. And it certainly isn’t something that happens over night. However, it does work, and will get some sweet paintball products for free. Ok let’s get to it.

If you hadn’t noticed, a certain company (Target.com) has started advertising through my Spyder Paintball Gun Blog. If you’ve visited their site before, you may find it a bit strange or may not understand it. I’ll explain what they offer it could mean a free getting a free Reactor Paintball marker, or a free JT FX-10 Thermal Mask, or other free paintball stuff.

This is how it works:

All you have to do is to fill a rather simple questionnaire that Target's marketing department created (that's why they give you a free $500 Target gift card - to get marketing data to analyze). From what I understand, this Target promotion will end some time next week, so you better grab this card while you can.

This Target promotion is available to anyone over 18, who live in US (there is geotargeting, so non US traffic is re-routed).

I already got mine free $500 Target gift card.

With Target gift card I got cool free paintball stuff. It’s free and fun.
Reactor Electronic Paintball Marker — $199,99
Evolution Y-Board Paintball Loader — $84,99
Clear/Black Medium JT FX-10 Thermal Mask — $79,99
VL Pro Attitubes Black Medium Harness and Tubes — $19,99
Wild Streak 2000-ct. Orange Paintballs — $54,99
Wild Streak 2000-ct. Orange Paintballs — $54,99
NET JET Mission Paintball Instant Online Key — $3,99
Total: $498,93

You may choose other free paintball stuff from Target catalog for your free $500 Target gift card.

About Target

Target's first store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, in 1962. Its on-trend merchandise at affordable prices launched a new era in discount retailing. This "T-1" store was easy to shop, attractive and always clean. It served as the prototype for every Target store opened since then, and it changed how consumers think about discount shopping.

Spider MR1 paintball gun

Q: I have A spider MR1 paintball gun, and i was just wondering does it make a big difference haveing a remote or not and should i get one? and my second question is if i have some Different Velocity Springs will the Highest one Make a Real Difference in the accuracy of the paintball gun and the range?? i only play woodsball.

A: Remote lighten the paintball marker, act like expansion chambers for Co2, tether the marker to you, etc. In my opinion, their worth it but it depends what style/postion you play.

Most all paintball markers are able to adjust the velocity with a simple screw, different screws are not really needed. A higher velocity will not increase your accuracy and barely increases your range. When you play, NEVER USE A MARKER SHOOTING ABOVE 300FPS. Its NOT SAFE.

If you want better accuracy, accuracy comes from a good paintball to barrel match (look into a better barrel). For increased range, the only barrels that increase the range while staying under the 300FPS maximum velocity is the Flatline Barrel (Tippmann markers) and the Apex Barrel/Tip.

Don't ever shoot above 300FPS.

via http://www.pbreview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=424060

Q: I just go Custom Products Classic .689 Spyder Barrel for my spider paintball gun and i am not impressed with its accuracy.
it cannot consistently hit a target 50 feet way even. the spread radius is like 10 inch.

i am fairly new to paintball, so i have some concerns about the quality of this barrel.

what concerns me is that at both ends of the barrel there are dents in paint, which, i guess, are made during the manufacturing when the paint was still wet.
at the receiving end the metal was a little bent too, right at the spot where the paint was dented.

same thing at the tip. there are 4 spots with dented paint.

would that affect the accuracy or is this just cosmetic???

A: You say you are new to paintball, so my concern for your unhappiness with the accuracy is the paint you are using. Are you using good quality, FRESH paint? The paint should have NO dimples or flatspots on them. CP is a decent quality barrel and should work well. Another thing is aim if you are testing accuracy, make sure you are holding your gun steady. When I do an accuracy test I will always rest the gun on a solid surface, like a table, to make sure the gun is perfectly still.

Whats the best spyder for speedball

tippman_rambo:
im running a tippman and i find it somewhat hard to compete with the speedballers so i want to find a decent spyder for speedball price range of 200-400

all i want is something that will keep up nothing overly fantsy

JoshPuffyPuff:
Best spyder for speedball. Quick questions do you have compressed air or co2? And do you have a decent hopper? If you have compressed air i'd go with a Spyder vs2 or vs3 depending on your preference.

The only real difference is the spyder vs3 has a rocking trigger frame and the spyder vs2 paintball gun has a stansard style double trigger.

If co2 is your only option a vs1 would be the way to go. Just make sure you have a hopper that can keep up.

tippman_rambo:
rite now for my tippmann im running co2 but i can run anything as far as external hardware for the gun il be upgrading it all hopper tank barrel mayyybee but not likly for a while i mite upgrade the gun its self il have to see

JoshPuffyPuff:
Well if your running c02 and your looking for a speedball spyder the vs1 is a great gun. As long as you have a hopper to keep up.

tippman_rambo:
ok 1 vote spider vs1 painball gun

Coffinstuffer:
Why a spyder? With the release of these new-fangled 08 markers, you can get all kinds of insanely good 06/07 markers insanely cheap now - brand new.

And then there's used; for the same reasons, guns that once went for 1200 are now being sold for beans. You can pick up Karnivors for 300 and A1s for 500 if you know where to look - The Spider VS3 paintball gun is about 300, last time I checked - For the same price or just over it, I'd rather get a massively awesome high-end marker than a good low end.

I'm not ragging on Kingman Spyder or anything, I'm just saying that you're really not getting the best bang for your buck.

paintballjames:
If your looking for a Spyder paintball gun I suggest the VS2. It has the standard double trigger as someone already said. For 400 you can get the Spider VS2 a decent HPA tank and a used Halo or hopper of your choice.

Graybass_20x6:
Coffinstuffer has a good point. I don't want to knock Spyders either, but there are a lot of high-end guns that you can grab for your price range. You can always go for an Ion, or even a cheaper Autococker or Timmy. If you're not afraid of used gear, you can find a huge selection of high-end guns that are easy on the wallet.

But if you're into the Spyder brand, you can't go wrong with a VS2 or VS3 paintball gun. Just make sure you go air for those, or any other higher-end gun. It's a big beginning investment, but a lot better in the long run.

gaza_maajka:
Very true about the used- and on-sale high-end markers... i was even thinking of grabbing one cuz of the prices they go for now.
I got a Spyder VS2 paintball gun, and you'll most likely need to get a barrel right away if you wanna play decent with it. Anyone disagree?

PSP and APPA Announce New ScoreBlast Technology!

Paintball Sports Promotions, the world’s most popular paintball league, and the American Paintball Players Association, creators of paintball’s most successful registration and player classification system, are pleased to release APPA’s new ScoreBlast technology at the season-opening PSP Phoenix Open tournament.

With ScoreBlast technology, teams add the number for a text-enabled cell phone to their roster and then at the event receive updates blasted directly to their phone! This new service will roll out with automated updates of each team’s schedule as they advance through the tournament, with even more information to be added to ScoreBlast as the season progresses.

PSP and APPA Announce New ScoreBlast Technology!

"Paintball Sports Promotions is not satisfied with merely meeting player expectations, and neither are we. That’s why APPA has continued to innovate, developing the most comprehensive registration system in the sport," said APPA creator, Chris Raehl. "We've continually add new features like our pioneering real-time online-scoring, our ID card line eliminating ExpressID Pass, and now our new ScoreBlast service."

Teams who use ScoreBlast will no longer have to wait on-site for all games to finish and the next day’s schedule to be printed nor have to find internet access at the hotel to check the online schedule. They can instead grab some food, some sleep, or socialize with all of the other paintball players at the event, as their next day’s opponents, fields and game times will be ScoreBlasted directly to their phone. ScoreBlast works with all major cell phone carriers, both domestic and international.

"It's not enough to just charge player registration fees without having a comprehensive registration system to back it up, and that’s why leagues that value their players like PSP does use the APPA system,” said PSP Chief Operating Officer and former professional player Lane Wright. “From providing the best officials and best format in the sport to using only all-natural grass playing surfaces, every decision PSP makes is ultimately dictated by providing the best experience for the player. That kind of focus explains why more players have chosen to play PSP events than any other league for five years straight."

Spider Paintball forum tales

Im clueless

So I played paintball pretty routinely a few years ago with my Spider paintball gun. Haven't played since then and am looking to get back into it. Back when I was playing, I wanted an autococker bad but never got one. Now I see one for sale locally for $150.
My questions are:

  1. Are cockers from back then still good guns these days? Should I just pay a little more for a used ion/pmr?
  2. Is $150 a good deal for the orracle shown in the picture?
  3. Do I HAVE to get an HPA for this gun or will my old CO2 work fine until I get around to getting another tank?

Lower tube "window"

I've been modding my Spider Pilot paintball gun more and more, and I keep on thinking "Man, this upper tube is so modded, but the lower tube is so...plain. So I got to thinking about what I could do without ****ing it up, and I thought of the one place that air doesn't go through on the Spider paintball gun on the lower tube: the back of it, where the spring is. So I'm going to make a "window" so I can see the spring.
I got to lookin more at it, and I realized I could cut quite a bit off, and that there's already the perfect place to cut, right where the words Spider Pilot paintrball gun are.
See right where the "Spider Pilot" is? that's what I wanna cut out, that area that is milled out. I'll probably do it with a dremel and files, but could a CNC mill do this?
My only worry is how much it would cut into the part that joins the upper and lower tube, and how much this might weaken it.
Would the body be able to hold up, with maybe a bit of beating (I play woodsball)? How much might I mess up my marker if dirt gets in there? I clean out my marker after every game and take good care of it, so I don't think I'll be in much trouble, as long as I clean it up quickly.
Now that I think of it, do I even need the part in the back that joins the upper and lower tubes? You can see where that little window area kinda continues on, could I just cut that entire area off? Not even have something seperating that part? I almost wanna do this just for bragging rights, I think I would be the person with the most metal taken off of that area.

New Bee, pleasee HELP!

hey, i have just started to get into paintball. I have recently purchased a Kingman Spider MR1 paintball gun. I looked it up read some reviews on it and it looked like a pretty good gun to start off with. But i hung out with a friend and he had a Avant e99 laying around. So we were messing around with it trying to figure out how it works. It was pretty confusing i must say. Like we would pull the cocking back bolt, but once we pulled the trigger it would close up the hole where the ball comes down from the elbow. I didnt understand how it worked. Will my new Kingman Spider MR1 paintball gun be like that? and if any one can help me figure out how a paintball gun works would be great!

Paintball Sports Promotions Format Updates for Divisional XBall

Following further review of the Divisional XBall formats, the following updates have been made.

Paintball Sports Promotions

Division 1 XBall

Division 1 matches will consist of a race to 7 points run on a 15 minute clock. Teams will switch sides after every fourth game point scored. Rosters will be capped at a total of 17 people with a maximum of 12 players allowed. A limit of 2 professional players will be permitted on the roster.

Division 2 XBall

Division 2 matches will consist of a race to 7 points run on a 15 minute clock. Teams will switch sides after every fourth game point scored. Rosters will be capped at 17 people with a maximum of 12 players allowed. A limit of 2 D1 players will be permitted on the roster. No professional players will be allowed.

Division 3 XBall

Division 3 matches will consist of a race to 5 points run on a 15 minute clock. Teams will switch sides after every third game point scored. Rosters will be capped at 17 people with a maximum of 12 players allowed. A limit of 2 D2 players will be permitted on the roster. No D1 or professional players will be allowed.

Overtime Play changes for Divisional XBall

The following overtime format will be used for all Divisional XBall; this includes Divisions 1, 2, and 3. This does not affect 5-man XBall.

For 2008, the sudden death overtime period has been increased to 5 minutes instead of 3 minutes, as in 2007. The 90 Second rule will still be in effect during this 5 minute sudden death, meaning that a MAJOR penalty received by a player in the last 90 seconds of this overtime period, will cause immediate stoppage of play and the winning point to be awarded to the opposing team.

If the 5 minutes of sudden death play passes without a winner, the teams will then proceed to the 60 second 1-on-1 matchups that have been used in the past in Divisions 2 and 3.

As in the past, a win will still equal 2 points, a loss will be 0 points, and a loss in overtime will equal 1 point.
